The Ark of the Covenant is one of the most iconic MacGuffins in movie history , ranking alongside the Maltese Falcon, the Infinity Stones, and the glowing briefcase from Pulp Fiction . Throughout the movie, characters like Belloq build up a fascinating mystique around the
That's why it's so good as a period drama for a Cancer. The clothing, architecture, transportation, weapons, even educational facilities are from this specific time period, giving this adventure another dimens
**That's fantastic. Going back to the start, what was your first impression of Raiders when you were talking to the producers about doing it? Because it's very Lucas and Spielberg as a story, but it's also unlike what they'd been doing previously. What was your first impression of the movie and of Marion as well
Yes, those scenes where I am barefoot, which there are a lot of when I'm in that white dress, for the most part. It's very fanciful that I put on that white dress and a pair of high heels out in the middle of the desert. And then I seem to lose my shoes entirely in the Well of Souls. It's interesting. I don't know exactly how I got through being barefoot for all of that. Certainly, in the Well of Souls with all the snakes, it was very challenging. There were a lot of snakes there, and I had nothing on my teeth and nothing on my legs - once the skirt gets ripped, the bottom half of my legs is also completely bare. So, it does feel very much like I have no protection against the fire and the snakes and everything that was going on. I don't know, you just rise to the occasion, as they say. When you're an actor, they throw all these circumstances at you. You just have to sometimes take a deep breath and see it as a part of the adventure. What can I say? I guess I'm a good sp
What, you didn't know there was a riveting 1930s period drama hiding under this classic adventure film? The famous Dr. Jones was uncovering ancient mysteries and fighting Nazis before it was cool, and immersion in this time period is what contributes to the status Raiders of the Lost Ark as a fan and critic favor
That doesn't mean that Cancer likes everything that falls under this category. Remember, this is our moody and wavering sign with nary a constant focus, so to say that Cancer likes everything under the period drama banner would be wrong. A few of the entries on this list may surprise you. Here are some ideas for period dramas that Cancer will love, along with a few that they will h
A couple of moments in Raiders push the boundaries of its PG-13 rating – particularly the climactic sequence in which a couple of the bad guys’ faces melt off their skulls due to the awesome power of the Ark. The face-melting effect is still terrifying after all these ye
In their scenes, white stuntmen Malcolm Weaver and Terry Richards were cast to portray ethnic villainous henchmen. Problematically, they had been given bad prosthetics and makeup to play the part . Not only is this extremely racist but it is quite surprising that Spielberg hadn't thought so
Nobody else could’ve played Indiana Jones as effectively as Harrison Ford . Ford nailed the character’s rough edges, plucky attitude, and sarcastic comic sensibility, and made an instant icon out of the world’s coolest archeolog
However, that's not to say that it's perfect. There are several issues with the film that even the most avid fans would love to change, especially when there are several racial concepts and predatory behaviors glossed over. With this in mind, since 2021 marks the 40th anniversary of the action/adventure epic, we'll take a look at how the film has aged culturally and cinematica

Swelter tries hard to be an edgy contemporary Western , but it falls very, very short of its goal. This heist film stars Lennie James as a former professional thief turned small-town sheriff who is hunted down by his former breth
A lot about Marion Ravenwood’s role in Raiders hasn’t aged well, from Indy dating her as a teenager to the fact that she’s a damsel in distress in most of her scenes (except, notably, the plane set piece when she knocks out the pilot and saves Indy from the strapping mechanic beating him to a pu
What ultimately made Raiders of the Lost Ark Mounts Ark – and George Lucas’ other franchise, Star Wars , for that matter – such a success is its sense of pure escapism. The Indiana Jones movies (and the Star Wars movies) offer audiences a much-needed break from the real wo
Modern movies tend to lean heavier into comedic dialogue and would've thrown in a few jokes or visual gags. What elevates Indy's adventure is that it's played straight. His introduction in the Peruvian jungle uses no words, only a head tilt, a flash of his whip, and a slow walk into the light. Similarly, the movie's humor is found through circumstance, not gags, such as when the vine Indiana's clinging to begins to slip, or the snake suddenly appears in his lap on the pl
